ICE cotton gained on Friday to end the week up after a sharp drop the prior session on news top consumer China would begin releasing its massive stockpile, as some investors covered short positions. "There might be some short-term guys that were short on the news and took some profit ahead of the weekend," said Louis Rose, independent cotton trader and analyst with Risk Analytics in Memphis, Tennessee.

ICE cotton futures fell the most in 3-1/2 weeks on Thursday after top-consumer China announced it would begin releasing cotton from its massive state stockpile this year, raising concerns about the country's import demand. "The amount of cotton that they import will drop," said Ron Lawson, a partner at commodity investment firm Logic Advisors in Sonoma, California, adding that since much of the cotton in reserve is several years old, there may still be demand for imports of fresher, higher-grade

ICE cotton futures rose on Wednesday, boosted by a weaker US dollar after the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) lowered its expectations for world inventory for the 2014/15 crop year, which ends in July, in its monthly supply demand report. "They were slightly friendly because they lowered the rest of world ending stocks," Peter Egli, director of risk management at British merchant Plexus Cotton Ltd, said of the USDA numbers.

ICE cotton futures inched up on Tuesday, as funds continued to roll long positions forward and investors covered shorts amid expectations the US government will raise its forecast for US cotton exports in its monthly World Agriculture Supply and Demand Estimates Report.
"They probably should have done that in the last report. We've been running way ahead," said Keith Brown, a Moultrie, Georgia-based cotton trader. Total US export sales for the 2014/15 crop year, which ends in July, have alre

ICE cotton futures rose on Monday, supported by declines in the US dollar and a US government report issued Friday after market close that showed speculators had their smallest net long position since February. "Have more room to come in and buy, as well as continue to cover shorts," Sharon Johnson, introducing broker with Wedbush Securities in Atlanta said of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission report, adding that the December contract's close above its 50-day moving average could attract
