ICE cotton futures fell for the third straight day on Wednesday, hitting a four-week low as trend-following funds continued to exit July long positions, though concerns about slow planting progress so far helped boost the December contract.

ICE cotton futures fell for the second straight day on Tuesday, hitting a 3-1/2 week low as a stronger dollar prompted speculators to sell the July contract, with concerns about the next US crop providing some support to the December contract.
"We've seen this thing go from inverted to almost 50 points carry," said Louis Rose, independent cotton trader and consultant with Risk Analytics in Memphis, Tennessee, noting that the December contract was now trading at a premium to front-month July

Cotton yarn market again lost ground, and participants were holding bearish expectations over the future trends amid sluggish sales. In the week ended 15 May 2015, cotton yarn markets showed signs of weakness. In China, sale/ production ratios reported fell at some spinning mills in China while outlook turned even gloomier given the increase in inventory levels. Prices were unchanged due to a lack of demand from downward processors. In Shengze, 32s cotton yarn was pegged in the range of US$3.37-

ICE cotton futures had their largest single-session decline in more than six months on Monday due to fund profit-taking after three consecutive days of gains and substantial strengthening of the US dollar. "There's certainly room under this, another penny or two below this on the July contract," said Gideon, Missouri, cotton buyer Barry Bean. Despite its extensive losses, he noted, cotton remained locked in the tight trading range of recent weeks.

ICE cotton futures rose in light volume to their highest levels in more a week and a half on Friday, as a weaker dollar discouraged speculators from getting out of long positions amid an absence of commercial selling. "The longs are sitting tight at the moment," said Peter Egli, director of risk management at British merchant Plexus Cotton Ltd. "There's not enough new selling coming in. The trade is already short and the (speculators) don't want to liquidate yet."
