The government has set the cotton production target at 14.1 million bales for next season 2013-14, which is 5.75% more than the current year’s anticipated output.
For this season, the government had originally set the target at 14.6 million bales (each of 170 kg), but later revised it to 13.3 million bales following damage to crops caused by floods.

Oil prices eased in Asia today as revised fourth-quarter US economic growth disappointed, while dealers eyed huge federal spending cuts due to take effect, analysts said.
New York’s main contract, light sweet crude for delivery in April, shed 45 cents to $91.60 a barrel and Brent North Sea crude for April delivery slid 43 cents to $110.95.
“Oil suffered from the lower-than-expected US fourth-quarter GDP,” said Jason Hughes, head of premium client management for IG Markets Singapore.

Country`s silk exporters Thursday expressed concern at Finance Minister P.Chidambaram's proposal to increase duty on imported raw silk, fearing that it would further hit exports of silk fabrics as they heavily rely on cheap and high-quality imported raw silk from China.
In order to give a measure of protection to domestic sericulture, Chidambaram in his budget speech proposed to increase the duty on raw silk from 5 percent to 15 percent.

Bali`s exports of textile and textile products (TTP) shrank 19.83 percent in value to US$100.65 million in 2012 from US$125.54 million in the previous year.
The export earning fell despite an increase in volume because of shrinking price, I Ketut Teneng, chief spokesman of the Bali provincial administration, said.

As many as 104 private and public sector textile mills have shut down since 2009 on account of financial and labour problems, Parliament was informed on Wednesday.
Referring to textiles commissioner data, textiles minister Anand Sharma said the number of closed cotton/manmade fibre textiles mills (non-SSI) was 104 from fiscal 2009-10 up to December 2012.
“The major reason for closure of mills is financial problems. However, mills are also closed on account of labour problems and lock-outs,”
